Jaguar Land Rover has been «flabbergasted» by the early response to the Velar, with huge interest being shown in the new SUV

Land Rover is already confident of bumper local sales with its new Macan-chasing mid-sized SUV – the Velar.

According to JLR’s UK managing director Jeremy Hicks, after just six days of public awareness of the Velar, the company’s score of KMIs (Keep Me Informed requests) had passed 12,000, compared with around 3000 for the Evoque – itself a spectacular seller – in the same period.

«We’re flabbergasted at the response,» says Hicks, «because it’s based only on a silhouette and some pretty sketchy information. I’m especially confident that Velar will sell well to former estate car owners because it has all the appeal of ‘Allroad’ style vehicles but a fair bit more all-round capability.»

Hicks says true indications of the Solihull-built model’s UK potential won’t be known for several months – orders start to flow tonight and first deliveries won’t be made until summer – but Evoque sales here last year set a new record of 27,000 units, while the Range Rover Sport (the model above Velar) scored 12,000 sales. «Full year sales of 20,000 units would be a very good figure indeed,» says Hicks.

JLR aims to give the Velar a strong send-off by selling an initial 250 special First Edition models to early adopters. «The earliest buyers tend to be especially loyal buyers of our products,» says Hicks, «and they always load them with equipment. So, this time, we’re doing the job for them.»
